Giant Maze Invites Viewers to Wander Through Interactive Art Show

BUSHWICK — Snake through winding corridors, collide with trumpet players, and lose your way as lights wave around you — the maze is back.

The interactive art installation called "You Are Here" or "The Maze"  is literally a life-sized labyrinth with music, projections, and performances at the non-profit gallery Secret Project Robot on Melrose Street for the next three weeks.

The creators, a duo dubbed "Trouble," hope viewers actually get lost.

The line-up of performances for the opening night (Thursday) and other days is listed on Secret Project Robot's site, but don't be surprised if you catch a different act than intended. Trouble (Sam Hillmer and Laura Paris) plan to disorient the audience to make them question their expectations of performance art.

"Audience members arrive at ‘You Are Here’ with the intention of catching a particular presentation," the duo explain on their site, "but intentions are frustrated and transformed by the labyrinthine construction the festival provides."

Frustrated as viewers may become, the confusion "The Maze" creates has drawn interest both in New York City and abroad, with a venue in Berlin hosting Paris and Hillmer to set up their installation there this September.

In past years the exhibit has been at Death by Audio in Williamsburg and at Chashama Gallery in Manhattan.

"The Maze" will be at Secret Project Robot July 12 — Aug.4. All maze events are $10.
