COBBLE HILL — The Department of Transportation is expected to propose a plan for reducing speeding along Hicks Street, including removal of rush-hour parking ban along the eastside of the street, at a meeting hosted jointly by Community Board 6 and CB7 planned for Thursday evening.

In response to a long record of speeding cars and traffic accidents on Hicks Street, City Councilman Brad Lander has worked with the Department of Transportation and community activists to propose measures to make the street safer for drivers and pedestrians.

Many drivers tend to use Hicks Street as an alternative route when the BQE gets backed up, said Lander.

The DOT is expected to make two proposals at the meeting on Thursday. First, the agency proposes to remove rush hour parking restrictions along the northbound lane on Hicks street, so that cars can park here throughout the day.

The second proposal is to place bollards and planters on the corner of the bridge crossings over the BQE, like the one at Union Street, to increase safety for pedestrians waiting to cross Hicks Street.

"Hicks Street has been the site of too many traffic tragedies,” said Lander. “This is the first step toward making Hicks Street safe for drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians."

The meeting, hosted by Community Boards 6 and 7, will be held on June 21 at 6:30 p.m. inside of Holy Name Church, located at 245 Prospect Park West.
