NEW YORK CITY — Ticket sales for the Belmont Stakes at the online ticket-selling website StubHub.com have plummeted amidst news that Triple Crown hopeful I'll Have Another would not be racing, the company says.
The event was the highest-selling Belmont Stakes in the company's history, a spokeswoman for the company says. Now, general admission tickets that were selling for as high as $121 at the beginning of the week are selling for as low as $9.99.
"As soon as this became very high potential for a Triple Crown, we saw demand immediately spike," a spokeswoman for the company said. "Pricing has taken quite the fall over the news."
After winning the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes, I'll Have Another was poised to become the first Triple Crown winner in 34 years.
But just one day before the Belmont Stakes, trainer Doug O'Neill and owner J. Paul Reddam announced that the horse had suffered a tendon injury in his foreleg, and would not be racing.
The spokeswoman for StubHub said that, although ticket-price fluctuation was normal, she had never seen anything like this in her six years at the company.
"I'm honestly just curious to see how low these prices will go," the spokeswoman said.
