NEW YORK — A brief taste of summer ended abruptly Monday as lashing rain and low clouds created a gloomy follow-up to what was a beautiful weekend.

Strong thunderstorms and downpours are expected in all five boroughs, with rain forecast through Tuesday. Heavy rains fell at rate of up to an inch per hour Monday, according to the National Weather Service.

A flood advisory effective until 1 p.m. has been issued for all five boroughs, and the National Weather Service advised motorists to stay off the streets if possible.

Delays were expected on the 2 and 3 trains due to a water condition at the Nevins Street station in Brooklyn. All other area transit options, including Long Island Rail Road and New Jersey Transit, was so far unaffected by the flooding.

Flooding brought traffic to a crawl in the eastbound lanes of the Belt Parkway in Brooklyn at the Flatbush Avenue interchange, as huge puddles formed in the east- and westbound on-ramps and portions of the roadway.
