BROOKLYN — Two people, including a 12-year-old boy, were shot on a busy Crown Heights block Monday evening, police and fire officials said.

The boy was at Rugged Sole, a shoe store at 298 Utica Ave. at Union Street, when shots rang out just after 7:30 p.m. Monday, an FDNY spokesman said.

The 12-year-old was struck in the leg, and a 34-year-old man at the store was hit as well, police said.

Both victims were taken to Kings County Hospital Center in stable condition with non-life-threatening injuries, police and fire officials said.

It was not immediately clear why the shots were fired, but police said it appeared the boy had been hit by a stray bullet.

"We don't believe he was targeted," a police source said.

Inside the shoe store Monday evening, police used overturned white cups to mark the bullets and casings that littered the ground.

Several nearby residents and business owners said they were disturbed but not surprised by the shooting.

"A lady came by and told us to close the door," said Hussain Mahadi, who owns a beauty store nearby. "This happens a lot. Last year, there were three of them."
