DOWNTOWN — Police arrested 10 Occupy Wall Street protesters on Wall Street Monday night after detaining five people earlier in the day.
Protesters were camping out on the steps of the Federal Hall National Memorial across from the New York Stock Exchange after being pushed off the Wall Street sidewalk about 9 p.m. Monday.
The memorial is federal land, but the steps close to the public at sundown, a National Parks Service spokesman said Monday.
Protesters said they were asked to leave the steps, but refused, arguing a national park should not close to the public.
"Captains of the Army of the 1% have informed us that anyone attempting sleep in 'this area' will be arrested," tweeted SleepOWS at 11:36 p.m., a Twitter Account used by protesters sleeping on the sidewalks on and around Wall Street.
Cops arrested James Amico, 23, Mary Tardist, 23, Michael Garcia, 21, Anthony Vilka, 21 , Nkruniah (whose name has also appeared as 'Nkrumah') Tinsley, 30, Mathew Lepacek, 30, Thorin Caristo, 31, Amber Oestrich, 18, Huracio Govar, 44, and Alexandre Carvallo, 28, according to police.
The 10 arrested face charges including obstructing governmental administration, disorderly conduct, unreasonable noise and resisting arrest.
Police have not yet given details on how and specifically why the arrests were made.
The National Park Service did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
