MANHATTAN — Catholics and others observing the beginning of Lent on Wednesday could give up moving their cars, at least for the day.
The Department of Transportation has suspended alternate side parking for Ash Wednesday, which marks the beginning of Lent. Those observing the holiday traditionally give up certain foods or other favorites for the 40-day fast.
Many also fast on Ash Wednesday.
The city suspends alternate side parking for more than a dozen religious holidays, mostly in the spring and fall. Upcoming suspensions will include Purim in March, as well as Holy Thursday, Good Friday and three days of Passover in April.
Street regulations are also suspended for major national holidays, including Memorial Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas.
