Fashion Week Kicks Off With 10th Anniversary of Heart Truth Red Dress Show

MIDTOWN — The catwalk turned into a red sea of beautiful ladies when the Heart Truth Red Dress Collection Runway Show kicked off New York's Fashion Week festivities Wednesday night.

Celebrities like singer Gloria Estefan, Derek Jeter's on-again-off-again girlfriend Minka Kelly and actress Rebecca Romijn all came out to the strut their stuff during the 10th anniversary of the event, which puts models and celebrities in couture red dresses to bring attention to women's health.

The event, held in Midtown's Hammerstein Ballroom, is part of the Heart Truth campaign, headed by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute.

An annual Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week event since 2002, the Heart Truth Red Dress show boasts gowns made by top designers such as Diane von Furstenberg, Narcisco Rodriguez and Alberta Ferretti.

Other participants this year included singer Jennifer NettlesOlympic gold medalist Michael Phelps and model Christie Brinkley.

Brinkley, who has participated before, almost didn't appear this year because of her mother's poor health — she's suffered several heart attacks this year, according to Associated Press.

But because of the charitable nature of the show, she was encouraged to go, the wire service reported.

"My parents understand more than anyone about the importance of getting the right care," Brinkley told AP. "They're proud of me, that I've reached a place where I can give back."
