QUEENS — Police shot and injured a man suspected of using a BB gun to try to carjack an 89-year-old man in Corona on Thursday, authorities said.

The wild incident unfolded just after 1 p.m., when the would-be car thief approached an elderly man sitting in a 1992 Oldsmobile outside 102-14 Christie Ave., police said.

The 46-year-old suspect, whose name was not released, struck the elderly man with a BB gun that had been painted black, cutting the victim's arm, police said. He fled after a pair of witnesses rushed to the older man's aid.

That's when two plainclothes officers in an unmarked car spotted the suspect and chased him,  cornering him in a driveway on 46th Avenue and ordering him to drop the weapon, police said.

Police said the suspect turned toward the officers, prompting cops to shoot. He was struck once in the torso, NYPD officials said.

The suspect was taken to Elmhurst Hospital, where he was in stable condition, officials said. Police said they recovered a CO2-powered BB gun that had been painted black.

Charges against the man are pending, police said.
