MANHATTAN — New Yorkers were greeted with a blast of arctic air Tuesday as below-freezing temperatures gripped the city during the coldest day of the season so far.

The mercury was expected to drop into the teens Tuesday night and only reach a high of 29 during the day — with winds up to 37 miles per hour making it feel as low as -1 degree, according to the National Weather Service.

Adding to the bitter cold, a slight chance of snow is forecast before noon with flurries throughout the day, according to the National Weather Service.

The cold snap comes after a mild December and balmy temperatures over New Year’s weekend, including what was only the third recorded December in New York with no snowfall, according to WCBS-TV.

Wednesday will see a high of just 30 degrees but not dip into the teens at night, followed by back-to-back highs of 42 to finish the workweek, according to AccuWeather.

The weekend will get warmer, with an unseasonable high of 51 on Saturday and 46 on Sunday, according to AccuWeather.
