MANHATTAN — Congratulatos!
The Inwood resident behind the tongue-in-cheek Twitter feed poking fun at Mayor Bloomberg’s use of Spanish took home the Village Voice Web Award for Best Parody Twitter Handle Wednesday night.
The feed, @ElBloombito, uses a satirical Spanglish imitation of Bloomberg’s frequent bilingual media addresses to entertain “Newo Yorkos.”
Rachel Figueroa-Levin, who was inspired to start tweeting as “Miguel Bloombito” following his frequent Spanish-language updates during Hurricane Irene, even got a nod from the mayor himself — via his actual Twitter feed.
“Felicidades, @ElBloombito!” he tweeted Wednesday night, linking to a story announcing the award.
Figueroa-Levin said she appreciated the fact that Bloomberg has taken the joke in stride.
“I'm once again tickled (and grateful) that Mayor Bloomberg isn't cross over the El Bloombito parody,” she told DNAinfo in an email. “Either he hasn't read the tweets or he has an AMAZING sense of humor. Or both. He's a classy mayor.”
However, that won’t keep Figueroa-Levin from using her alter-ego to continue skewering the mayor’s Spanish, with tweets like: “Be mucho carefulo en el mal weathero. Los winds que strongo y el raiño esta weto.”
“Don’t think for a minute his class is going to get me to stop making fun of him LOL,” she joked.
