Jets Trounced by Patriots; Giants Fall Short in San Francisco

MANHATTAN — It was a tough weekend for the hometown teams.

The Jets lost to the rival New England Patriots, 37-16, at the New Meadowlands Stadium on Sunday, severely damaging their chances of winning the division.

The Jets (5-4) looked good on their opening drive, taking the ball 61 yards on just eight plays, but kicker Nick Folk missed a 24-yard field goal.

Patriots quarterback Tom Brady then took over, in usual fashion, throwing for 329 yards and three touchdowns.

"It looks doubtful right now," Jets coach Rex Ryan told reporters after the game about his team's chances of winning the division. "Maybe I should guarantee we're out of it. The last time I did we made it."

Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez threw for 306 yards, but had just one touchdown and two interceptions. Runningback Shonn Greene ran for 61 yards on 13 carries, but the Jets "ground and pound" strategy was put aside once the team fell behind by two touchdowns in the third quarter.

The Patriots improved to 6-3 and took a one-game lead over the Jets (5-4) and Buffalo Bills (5-4) in the AFC East. New England has beaten the Jets in both match ups this season, giving them the tie breaker advantage over New York.

In San Francisco, the Giants failed to score on their final drive in a tough 27-20 loss to the 49ers at Candlestick Park Sunday.

Big Blue converted on two fourth down plays during the final drive, but the third time was no charm for the team.

Quarterback Eli Manning brought the team to the 49ers 10-yard line with under a minute to play, but was unable to convert on a fourth and two after his pass was knocked down.

"I'm very disappointed," Giants coach Tom Coughlin told reporters after the game. "I thought we were in perfect control. I thought we would get there, score and send it into overtime and win it in overtime. We've done well in those situations and I expected to do well again."

Manning threw for 311 yards and two touchdowns, but also had two interceptions.

At 6-3 the Giants are still in the lead in their division, but a Dallas Cowboy win on Sunday put America's Team just one game behind Big Blue. The Jets play at Denver on Thursday Night.
