GRAMERCY — Michael Anthony, executive chef of Gramercy Tavern, is recovering at home with his family after he underwent emergency open heart surgery last week at Beth Israel Hospital, Paper Mag reported on Thursday.

In a statement, the restaurant’s publicist, Leah Herman, said that Anthony was diagnosed with a tear in the wall of his aorta, otherwise known as an aortic dissection, after suffering chest pain. He immediately went into emergency surgery to repair the damage.

“The condition came as a surprise,” Herman said in the statement, “and he is incredibly thankful it was diagnosed and treated so quickly. He is grateful for the outstanding cardiac care he received at Beth Israel Hospital.”

Herman added that Anthony is looking forward to returning to the restaurant as soon as he is able.

Anthony has been the head chef at Gramercy Tavern since 2006.
