MANHATTAN — A man has been arrested and charged with murder in the shooting death of an Alphabet City teen who was gunned down on East 12th Street near Avenue C last month, police said.
Hockeem Smith, 24, of East 10th Street, is accused of fatally shooting 18-year-old Donovan “Keith” Salgado outside the Campos Plaza Housing Complex just before 2 a.m. on Oct. 16, the NYPD said.
Smith attempted to rob Salgado prior to the shooting, demanding money from the victim by saying "run your s--t", before firing a bullet into his torso, according to the criminal complaint.
He is charged with two counts each of second-degree murder, robbery and weapons possession, police said.
The alleged killer lived just a block away from Salgado’s East Ninth Street apartment, where hundreds of friends and family gathered after the incident to mourn the Washington Irving High School senior.
Smith is being held without bail.
