KIPS BAY — Saturday will mark the season’s third and final Kips Bay Community Day, an event that debuted in June and has since developed a cozy, hometown feel.
“It’s much more of a neighborhood festival,” said Mark Thompson, chair of Community Board 6. “It’s a very relaxed, fun atmosphere.”
The event takes place on the service road along the east side of Second Avenue between East 33rd and 30th streets. Thompson said the festivals have been so well-received that they will continue again next year, beginning in the spring and hopefully occurring once a month throughout the summer.
“It’s a great way to enliven a space that’s only used for parking. Why not turn it back to have people enjoy it on a weekend?” Thompson said.
The event has grown organically, the board chairman said. As more people have attended, more organizations and groups have volunteered to participate.
For its final installment, the featival will feature a puppet show, presented by the Repertorio Espanol, at 2 p.m., Thompson said.
A musical group from Daniel’s Music Foundation, a nonprofit that works with individuals with disabilities, will sing throughout the day. A local jazz band will also be performing, and teams of children from NY Chess Kids will compete al fresco.
“It’s just so fun to watch them,” Thompson said. “They’re so cute.”
Two gourmet food trucks will also be on hand, as will representatives from local businesses and area restaurants.
The Kips Bay Community Day will take place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Second Avenue between East 30th and East 33rd streets.
