MANHATTAN — The Mets avoided a sweep by the Yankees in the final game of this weekend's subway series with a late-inning comeback Sunday.

Mets slugger Jason Bay, who had been in the midst of a subpar season, finished the game with a line drive to right center field with the bases loaded, bringing in the game-winning run.

The Mets tied the game in the ninth inning with a single by pinch hitter Ronny Paulino off of Yankees' closer Mariano Rivera, evening the score at 2-2 and sending the game to extra innings.

Sunday's game faced a 89 minute rain delay, finally getting underway and sending the Yankees to a 2-1 lead in the eighth inning as the Yankees' Brett Gardner hit a triple into the right-field corner, later scoring off of Curtis Granderson's sacrifice fly ball.

The Yankees head to Cleveland Monday where they'll take on the Indians with the help of captain Derek Jeter, who's back from the disabled list.

The Mets play the Dodgers in California Monday night.
