MANHATTAN — Road and tunnel construction around the borough starting Friday could impact the holiday commute and affect motorists for months to come.

Because of repaving work at the Manhattan toll plaza for the RFK/Triborough Bridge, motorists from The Bronx wanting to go to Randall's Island will be forced to take an alternate ramp just south of the Bronx toll plaza.

That ramp, which was opened in 2009 to improve access, will leave drivers at the south end of the island, near the New York State Psychiatric Center. Repaving is expected to continue through the fall.

Beginning next Friday, July 8, at 9 p.m. the Manhattan-bound tube for the Midtown Tunnel will be closed for concrete removal and pothole repair.

Queens-Midtown Tunnel Manhattan approach tunnel tube will be closed over the weekend from July 8 - July 11, 2011.

Cars and city buses will be permitted to travel in both directions in the other tube.  But commercial traffic will have to use either the Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel or the RFK/Triborough Bridge as an alternative.

Work will continue until 2 a.m. July 11, the agency said.
