MURRAY HILL — A private garbage truck collided with a pickup truck and slammed into a tree on Third Avenue near 36th Street early Wednesday, the fire department said.

The crash happened around 6 a.m. Wednesday and emergency workers transported one person to Bellevue Hospital with minor injuries, fire department officials said.

Linda Calle, who is a cashier at Sarge's Restaurant & Deli on the corner, said she was standing outside when she saw the garbage truck run a red light as it headed north on Third Avenue and slam into the pickup truck as it drove east on 36th Street.

"I was standing outside, and boom, there was a trash truck coming toward us," said Calle, 55, of Queens, "All hell broke loose."

She ran inside to call 911, and when she returned outside, she said the driver of the garbage truck wasn't hurt, but the man at the wheel of the red pickup truck was loaded onto a stretcher and taken to the hospital, she said.
