MANHATTAN — Severe storms were headed to New York Wednesday afternoon with forecasters warning even tornadoes could hit the city.

National Weather Service meteorologist Ross Dickman said conditions were "marginally favorable" for twisters to form, though no watch had been put in place in the city by 1 p.m.

"It's not out of the question," he said.

"There's potential for a tornado, but we have not yet issued a watch."

Watches had been issued in counties neighboring New York City, including Nassau and Westchester. Dickman said there was a five percent chance of a twister in the area, though he said it would be less likely in Manhattan.

The chance of severe thunderstorms, however, was much higher.

"We expect severe storms between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m.," he said.
