MANHATTAN — Long Island Rail Road customers may have to deal with service delays until Friday, according to MTA.

The LIRR canceled or diverted 22 of it's 98 westbound rush hour trains on Wednesday morning. Service delays are expected during rush hour Wednesday evening and also on Thursday.

Amtrak expects the tunnel to be back to full service on Friday morning, according to the MTA's website.

LIRR service has been disrupted since Sunday when a five-car Amtrak train got stuck in a tunnel after a minor derailment on Sunday.

Service was projected to return to normal by the morning rush on Thursday, but Amtrack informed the LIRR that repair work in the tunnel would take more time than expected, the MTA said.

The repair work includes replacement of 275 track ties damaged during Sunday's derailment.

The LIRR has warned customers to expect sporadic 10 to 20 minute delays until the repair work is completed.
