Mayor Registers Campaign Committee

MANHATTAN — Mayor Michael Bloomberg has insisted he's not running for office, but that didn't stopp him from registering a new campaign committee with the State Board of Elections.

Deputy Mayor Howard Wolfson told the Post that the sole purpose of the "Michael R. Bloomberg" committee, which was officially launched April 15, is to publicly report spending on the mayor's P.R. work.

The mayor recently launched a publicity effort, complete with a campaign-style TV ad and direct mailers, to tout his message in response to an attack campaign by education advocates.

"While not obligated to file, we chose to do so in order to disclose the expenditures," Wolfson told the paper.

Board of Elections spokesman Tom Connolly said campaign committees are typically formed to support candidates or to promote  issues — not to disclose politicians' spending.

"It’s kind of an unusual situation," he said.

The new committee's mailing address is the Peekskill, N.Y., home of Kathleen McInerney, identified by the Post as an employee of the mayor’s longtime accountant, Martin Geller.

Bloomberg's previous committees have been registered out of Geller's offices, the paper said.
