MANHATTAN - Reese Witherspoon and Robert Pattinson lit up the red carpet at the Ziegfeld Theatre in Midtown Sunday night at the premiere of their new film, "Water for Elephants."

Witherspoon ("Walk the Line") plays star circus performer, Marlena, who defies her controlling boyfriend played by Christoph Waltz ("Inglourious Basterds") to fall in love with Pattinson's Jacob, a veterinarian who joins the traveling troupe after both his parents die.

In a nice twist, Pattinson — who shot to fame as cold-as-ice vampire Edward Cullen in the "Twilight" series — plays a character with the same name as his on-screen werewolf nemesis.

"Water for Elephants" is based on a best-selling novel by the same name, and author Sara Gruen was on hand at Sunday's premiere.

Witherspoon dazzled in a white cocktail-length dress with black lace detailing, while Pattinson stuck to a dark suit and skinny tie.

The movie opens Friday.
