MANHATTAN — Mayor Michael Bloomberg said a presidential run by real estate mogul and reality TV star Donald Trump would be good for the country — particularly, the media.

"I've always said the public benefits from more choice. If Donald Trump wants to run, he should run," Bloomberg told reporters at an unrelated press conference Monday afternoon.

Bloomberg also noted that a run by Trump could have big benefits for the press.

"I think that would be very good for the Fourth Estate," Bloomberg said. "You'd certainly have lots of things to write about. He'd advertise a lot so you'd be able to sell him some space and that would pay your salaries."

Nonetheless, Bloomberg flatly dismissed accusations being floated by Trump that President Barack Obama may not have been born in the country.

"I think there is zero chance that President Obama was not born in America," the mayor said.

Bloomberg, who has also been floated as a potential 2012 candidate, has insisted numerous times that he has no intentions to run.

Obama advisor David Plouffe said this weekend that he believes Trump has "zero chance" of ever being elected president and dismissed his accusations as "sideshow behavior."
