MANHATTAN— MTA officials plan to roll out a text-alert system in the next two years, the New York Daily News reported.

The agency will launch the first text-alert system in Staten Island by the end of the year with the other boroughs following suit in 2012 and 2013, the News reported.

Buses equipped to send the text alerts will also be able to notify riders when problems or delays occur, the paper reported.

The program, called MTA BusTime, was used on the Brooklyn B63 line, where riders could get arrival information by texting 41411, the News reported.

Smartphone users will be able to get the updates on their devices as well as computers, the paper reported.
