EAST VILLAGE — The Acme Bar & Grill has served its last po' boy.
The restaurant closed its doors Tuesday after a quarter-century of serving Southern-style cooking on Great Jones Street.
The restaurant's manager Tony, who declined to provide his last name, confirmed the closure by phone but refused to elaborate on the situation.
"We couldn't hang," he said, "so we're going to close today."
After local blog EV Grieve broke the news, the Village Voice quoted Tony as saying that Acme was "here too long and there just wasn't enough business."
The restaurant, located between Broadway and Lafayette Street since 1986, boasted a Cajun-inspired menu including everything from catfish and Gulf shrimp to fried okra.
New York Times restaurant critic Sam Sifton rued news of Acme's demise on Twitter, writing that the loss should cue The Pretenders' song "My City Was Gone."
Tony did not know whether the restaurant would be reborn in another location.
"If we do," he noted, "we'll make a splash."
