MANHATTAN — Prepare to lose an hour of sleep this weekend — Daylight Saving Time starts early Sunday morning.
Manhattanites should "spring forward" by turning their clocks ahead an hour at 2 a.m. on March 13.
The shift will make for a groggy start to the workweek on Monday but will also give everyone an extra hour of sunlight in the evening.
In addition to setting their clocks forward, New Yorkers should also switch out the batteries on their smoke detectors, the FDNY said.
"Over seventy percent of fire-related deaths occur in homes not equipped with working smoke detectors. Checking and changing your smoke detector batteries when you change your clocks is the simplest way to protect yourself and your family from a fire," said Fire Commissioner Salvatore Cassano, in a statement.
Daylight saving will continue throughout the spring, summer and much of the fall before ending for the year on Nov. 6, 2011.
