MANHATTAN — First it was behind the schedule, then over budget and now, the MTA's $370 million subway information network is obsolete, the New York Daily News reported.
Installation of the fiberoptic network, which carries information like next train data, began in 2000 but was delayed several times and eventually went $76 million over budget, the News reported.
Even though the network will be completed this year, some of the technology used to build it dates from 2000 and is already obsolete, the MTA acknowledged in documents requesting help with updating the system, according to the News.
"Due to technology evolution and other factors, many components in this network are at or nearing their end life," said an October MTA document cited by the paper.
Officials fear that maintenance on the network could be difficult because some of the equipment used is no longer made and that the system won't be able to handle growing number of video from surveillance cameras, the paper reported.
