MANHATTAN — Barnard College is the latest school to institute a campus-wide smoking ban.

Greg Brown, the school's chief operating officer, announced in an email sent Tuesday and published on Barnard's student blog, that all smoking would be banned on campus once students return from spring break March 21.

"The decision to proceed from our current policy, where smoking is permitted in two designated outdoor spaces, to an entirely smoke-free environment is the result of regular requests from various members of the College community to complete a process we started in 2004 when we first limited outdoor smoking on campus," Brown said in the email.

CUNY voted to ban all outdoor smoking across its 23 campuses in February and City Council voted to ban smoking at all public parks.

Brown said that smokers at Barnard who were put out by the decision should consider taking advantage of the school's smoke-cessation programs.
