MANHATTAN — Hours after freeing a motorcyclist from under a bus in the Lincoln Tunnel, a group of NYPD officers rescued a man stuck in between a train and the platform at the East Broadway subway station Thursday.
The officers from Truck 1 of the NYPD's Emergency Services unit, who had been working the Lincoln Tunnel accident Thursday morning, responded to the call of a man struck by a train around 12:14 p.m., officials said.
After arriving, they found the man down on the track bed wedged into a space between the rails and and the station's platform, officers at the scene said.
Unable to free the man, who police said was in his 40s, officer Frank Stevens went in between two of the train cars and jumped onto the tracks to hoist him to safety, he explained.
The unidentified man was transported to Bellevue Hospital in serious condition about 12:54 p.m., police and fire officials said. Officials added the man was conscious and alert following the rescue, but the extent of his injuries was not clear. No criminality is suspected.
"I'm just glad he's alive," said a soot-covered Stevens after emerging from the subway station.
Earlier that morning, the officers of Truck 1 helped lift a bus to free a motorcyclist who had been pinned beneath it during a four-vehicle accident at the Lincoln Tunnel, according to police at the scene.
The emergency workers had also cut off the doors of one of the buses to free the passengers who were trapped inside, they said.
More than 50 people were injured in the Lincoln Tunnel crash.
Police at the scene said of the East Broadway incident said the man who was stuck between the train and the platform did not offer any explanation of how he ended up on the tracks.
F trains were being diverted over the A line from Jay Street-Metrotech to West 4th Street before service was restored at 1:41 p.m., according to the MTA.
Earlier this month, an off-duty MTA worker fell onto the tracks and was knocked unconscious at the East Broadway subway station after being attacked by a man on the platform, police said.
The NYPD recently released video of the suspect wanted for the assault.
