MANHATTAN — Several famous New Yorkers are packing heat with licensed handguns.

In a review of gun ownership records for Manhattan, the New York Times uncovered a collection of boldfaced names who are registered for gun ownership in the city.

Among the surprise gun owners, Yetta Kurland, Greenwich Village lawyer and St. Vincent's Hospital advocate.

Conservative stalwart, Roger Ailes, president of Fox News, has a license to carry a weapon from his home in New Jersey into the city as does Fox News host, Sean Hannity, who is permitted to bring in his weapon from his Long Island home, the Times reported.

John J. Mack, chairman of Morgan Stanley, is also licensed to carry his handgun from his home in Westchester County to the city, the paper reported.

In order to legally own a gun in New York City, where at most one percent of households have a gun, residents have to purchase a license for $340, submit to a background check by the NYPD, and have their fingerprints processed for a $100 fee, the Times reported.

Licenses are valid for three years and owners can have up to 25 handguns registered per license, the paper reported.

There were 41,164 handguns registered with the NYPD as of January but no comprehensive data on how many illegal handguns circulate in the city.

Some of the gun-owners had mixed-feelings about their ownership.

Alexis Stewart, a radio host and daughter of Martha Stewart, told the Times that she purchased her .357 Magnum after 9/11 for safety.

Despite owning a firearm, Stewart isn't a big fan of handgun ownership.

"I don't believe people should be allowed to have handguns in America," Stewart told the Times.
