UPPER EAST SIDE — Graydon Carter, the editor in chief of Vanity Fair and co-owner of the Waverly Inn in the West Village, is interested in buying the legendary Elaine's restaurant, the New York Daily News reported.
Opened by Elaine Kaufman on East 88th Street in 1963, Elaine's became a gathering place for Manhattan's celebrity set where writers including Gay Talese and Kurt Vonnegut mingled with entertainers like Frank Sinatra and Jack Nicholson.
Kaufman died at age 81 in December after a long struggle with pulmonary disease.
Diane Becker, Elaine's longtime manager, took over the restaurant after Kaufman's death.
Carter and his business partner, Ken Aretsky, created what has been called a downtown Elaine's catering to a younger group of celebrities with the Waverly Inn on Bank Street in the West Village and Monkey Bar on the Upper East Side, the News said.
