MANHATTAN — New York City public schools remained open Wednesday morning despite an overnight storm that dumped nearly nine inches of snow on the city.

Schools Chancellor Cathie Black made the call to keep schools open at 5 a.m. Wednesday morning and canceled all scheduled field trips.

Black announced later in the morning that after-school programs and PSAL games will proceed as scheduled.

While hundreds of suburban schools closed on Wednesday, Manhattan public school students were once again denied a snow day.

Since 1978, the city has ordered schools closed due to inclement weather just six times for a total loss of eight days of instruction.

City students were given a rare treat when schools were closed twice Last February. In fact, public and Catholic schools were closed pre-emptively the day before when another Nor'easter walloped Manhattan with over 20 inches of snow.
