Other Side of the World Celebrates 2011

MANATTAN — Most of the world had finished up their celebrations by the time hordes of New Year's celebrated the ball drop in Times Square Friday night.

About 1.5 million spectators watched as Sydney Harbour was lit up with a dazzling display of fireworks to ring in the New Year in Australia while most New Yorkers were still in bed at 6 a.m., the Associated Press reported.

In Asia, fireworks exploded next to Malaysia's landmark Petronas Twin Towers during New Year celebrations in Kuala Lumpur.

And at midnight in Taiwan, fireworks formed a spiraling dragon climbing up Taipei's tallest skyscraper.

In Hong Kong, hundreds of thousands of people gathered along Victoria Harbor to watch fireworks explode from the roof tops of the city's 10 most famous buildings. Revellers also celebrated in Hong Kong's very own Times Square.

Tens of thousands attended the first count down party for the New Year at Opera House Square in Ha Noi, Vietnam.

Fireworks exploded above Singapore's financial district at the stroke of midnight to mark 2011.

And five hours before New York celebrates, thousands will witness a musical and firework display at the 135-meter high London Eye, located on the southern banks of the Thames River in England, the AP reported.

Meanwhile, back in the Big Apple, more than a million people are expected to be whooping it up in Times Square by the time the the giant ball drops at midnight. The massive snowstorm that blanketed the city with 20 inches of snow on Sunday will be an afterthought thanks to the work of crews in the days leading up to New Year's Eve.
