MANHATTAN — The blizzard's remnants caught up with NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly Wednesday night when his vehicle was involved in a thee-car pile-up in Brooklyn, police said.
Kelly was traveling in a Ford Expedition police vehicle on the Gowanus entrance to the Belt Parkway in Brooklyn around 8 p.m. when his vehicle hit with a white Ford Econoline van that had skidded out and slammed into a snowbank, police said. Kelly's vehicle then got hit from behind by a third vehicle, police said.
The Econoline van had braked to avoid a red sedan that cut in front of it, then fishtailed into a snow embankment and slammed into a barricade before coming to rest in the middle of the roadway, police said. Kelly's vehicle crashed into that van, and was then slammed in the rear driver's side by a Lincoln town car. The driver of the red sedan that caused the original accident fled the scene.
The driver of the Econoline van, Kelly and his driver, and the driver and passenger of the town car were not hurt and declined medical treatment at the scene, police said.
Police said both vehicles were traveling about 40 m.p.h. and no airbags were deployed.
The police vehicle was driven off the scene. The Lincoln sustained minor damage and was also driven off the scene. The van would not start and had to be towed, police said.
