MANHATTAN — New Yorkers observed the first day of Kwanzaa on Sunday, which runs through January 1 and celebrates the heritage and culture of Africans and African-Americans.
Among the festivities in Manhattan, the American Museum of Natural History hosted Kwanzaa 2010, the Legacy Continues, on Sunday, featuring Ivory Coast dances, African drumming, gospel music and other African-American music and dance performances.
The celebration at the museum also featured a marketplace offering crafts and special Kwanzaa foods.
Kwanzaa was established in 1966 and is a cultural holiday, meant to instill knowledge of and pride in African heritage.
