MANHATTAN — Manhattanites woke to frigid temperatures and swirling snow Tuesday morning.

The combination prompted the National Weather Service to issue a warning about hazardous driving conditions in the tri-state area until 9 a.m. on Tuesday.

As much as two inches of snow dusted the region overnight and another half-inch was possible for the morning commute, the NWS reported.

Motorists should drive cautiously due to icy conditions on untreated surfaces, the weather service cautioned. Despite the potentially slick roads, alternate side parking rules remained in effect on Tuesday.

Straphangers weren't spared the wintry mess as slippery sidewalks and icy winds made for a chilly ride into work.

The high temperature for Tuesday was a bone-chilling 28 degrees, with breezes and little sun making it feel more like the low teens, according to Accuweather, with a mostly cloudy and breezy forecast for the day.

The below average cold was expected to stick around for much of the week with high temperatures staying in the 30s through Friday.
