MANHATTAN — Upper East Side-based teen soap opera "Gossip Girl" may be winding to a close — especially since star Leighton Meester announced she'll leave the show once her contract is up, according to media reports.
Meester's contract ends in two years and although she "enjoys working on the show and living in New York" she won't be returning, according to E! Online.
The show, which has filmed all over Manhattan, including shoots at Columbia University and Grants Tomb, has been a great ratings success for its network, The CW, and has reportedly brought significant money to the city.
Meester hinted that, without her character Blair Waldorf, the show might have to come to an end.
"I don’t know…but I think there’s that old saying about wanting to go out on top," Meester told E!
The starlet had been taking lots of time off of the show to film movies including the upcoming flick "Country Strong," where she'll play opposite Gwyneth Paltrow.
