MANHATTAN — Scruffily dressed cab drivers may need to rethink their wardrobes as the Taxi and Limousine Commission rolls out a new dress code, according to the New York Times.
Although specific types of attire aren't banned outright, the new code would require cabbies to "present a professional appearance," according to the paper.
The current dress code nixes clothing including tank tops, bathing suits and tube tops, or drivers risk a $25 fine, the Times reported. However the current code is rarely enforced and the TLC says the new code is more of a guideline than an opportunity to hand out tickets.
"Proper dress is not something that we can enforce very easily," David Yassky, chairman of the TLC told the paper. "Nonetheless, we want to communicate to drivers that there is a standard of behavior, and that’s what the rule should get across."
The code changes are expected to be approved in December.
