CHELSEA — Chelsea residents with a sweet tooth, take note — there's a new cupcake in town.

Scarsdale import Lulu Cake Boutique opened its doors at 112 Eighth Ave. this week, attracting plenty of longing looks through the windows.

"The retro desserts are going fast," co-owner Jay Muse, himself a Chelsea resident, said Friday.

Specifically, the "yodels" (chocolate sponge rolls filled with dark chocolate mouse or vanilla bean whipped cream) are quick sellers, followed by the cream cheese frosting-filled red velvet twinkies.

On its cupcake rack, Lulu offers all the usual chocolate and vanilla buttercream mixes, but so far, a more exotic halvah-frosted black sesame option is going first.

Chelsea resident Joaly Alcala, 37, said Friday that she came to Lulu for the hard-to-find Intelligentsia coffee, but will stick around for the sweets and the atmosphere.

"It's cute and light and airy, and the staff is fantastic," Alcala said as she split a peanut butter cup cupcake with a friend.

The bakery also takes orders for specialty celebration cakes, which helped Lulu establish itself up in Westchester. Lulu also operates a by-appointment-only Kosher cake boutique in Brooklyn.
