MANHATTAN — The late Yankees owner and baseball dynamo George Steinbrenner is on the ballot for the National Baseball Hall of Fame, the Hall announced Monday in a statement.

In an nostalgic turn of events, Steinbrenner, who died in July, is joined on the ballot by Billy Martin, the Yankees manager fired and rehired by the Boss on multiple occasions.

The special ballot considers long-retired players, executives, umpires and managers whose careers have had great impact on the game during the expansion era — 1973 to the present.

To make it into the Hall, candidates need 12 votes from the 16-member committee, which includes such baseball greats as Johnny Bench, Whitey Herzog, Jim Palmer and Tony Perez.

The inductees will be honored during Hall of Fame Weekend 2011, which takes place in Cooperstown from July 22 to July 25 of next year.

In addition to Steinbrenner and Martin, other individuals being considered include former players Vida Blue, Dave Concepcion, Steve Garvey, Ron Guidry, Tommy John, Al Oliver, Ted Simmons and Rusty Staub, and the executives Pat Gillick and Marvin Miller.

The results will be announced Dec. 6 from the Winter Baseball Meetings in Orlando, Fla.
