MANHATTAN — Edison Peña, one of the 33 men rescued from a Chilean mine less than three weeks ago, will run the ING New York City Marathon this Sunday, according to Universal Sports.
While trapped a half-mile underground, Peña jogged three to six miles a day through the tunnels of the mine, presumably to keep sane and to stave off boredom, according to the Runner's World blog RW Daily.
Upon hearing of Peña's story, Mary Wittenerg, the president and CEO of New York Road Runners, which organizes the race, invited the miner now dubbed "The Runner" to participate in this year's marathon, reported Universal Sports.
"The marathon is all about heart, determination, courage, hope and overcoming challenge," Wittenberg told the website in an e-mail. "What a perfect platform New York is to celebrate Mr. Peña, and his colleagues, who displayed all the above in a 'marathon' way beyond any the rest of us could imagine."
Peña, along with 32 other miners, was rescued from the San Jose mine near Copiapo, Chile, on Oct. 13.
