Car Vandals and Thieves Put Police on High Alert in Inwood

INWOOD — Police have increased neighborhood patrols after several parked cars in the Park Terrace section of Inwood were recently vandalized or robbed of parts.

Last week, five driver-side windows were smashed on Park Terrace West between Isham and West 215th streets, police said. And on Oct. 8, a car parked on Park Terrace East had its four tires stripped.

Police have no suspects but said they are looking into whether neighboring building security cameras may have captured footage of the crimes and are asking residents with information to call into the precinct.

"The captain has asked our tour guys to give it special attention," Officer Haydee Pabey said. "In the past we've been able to make arrests with help."

Some residents said vandalism and theft is not a recent development.

"Half the engine of my Honda Accord was removed when my car was parked on Park Terrace West," Inwood resident Peter Bockman, 62, said in an e-mail. "That was about seven years ago. So you see these incidents are nothing new."

Local resident Chad Miller, who complained of a general lack of police presence, was glad to hear that NYPD were doubling their efforts.

"It'll be good to see more nighttime patrols," he said.
