MANHATTAN — It's been months since pitcher Francisco "K-Rod" Rodriguez earned a save for the New York Mets, but he was reportedly able to save a deal with his team on Tuesday.

Following a fight Rodriguez allegedly had with the grandfather of his children, the Mets will reportedly back off from trying to make K-Rod's contract non-guaranteed for next season. In exchange, the troubled pitcher will forfeit the $3.1 million he was owed for the final two months of the 2010 season, the New York Post reported.

"We are pleased Frankie Rodriguez has accepted responsibility for his actions and their consequences," Mets COO Jeff Wilpon said, according to the Post. "We have been assured that he is taking steps to address the issues that led to the incident, and those efforts will continue."

K-Rod was charged with assault in August after he allegedly punched his longtime girlfriend's father, Carlos Pena, 53, in the face after a Mets game at Citi Field.

Rodriguez is also charged with violating a restraining order that bars him from contacting his girlfriend, Daian Pena, and her family. The star closer allegedly sent several text messages to Pena.

Rodriguez's contract guarantees him $11.5 million for the 2011 season, with a $17.5 million option for the 2012 season if the pitcher logs 55 games next year.
