MANHATTAN — New Yorkers were told to brace themselves for more than just heavy rain Tuesday, as the National Weather Service issued a tornado watch for Manhattan and the tri-state area, effective until 6 p.m.

A tornado watch is not as severe as a warning — which means tornado activity has already been picked up by radar. Rather, a watch means conditions are favorable for tornadoes. Forecasters said wind gusts up to 70 mph, hail and lightning are possible.

The tornado watch was issued less than two weeks after meteorologists believe a twister with 100 mph winds may have passed through the city, leaving more than 25,000 people without power and the suspension of LIRR service.
