MANHATTAN — The New York Mets announced Monday that pitcher Francisco Rodriguez has a torn ligament in his thumb after an alleged altercation with his girlfriend's father last Wednesday.

After pitching Saturday, Rodriguez, known as K-Rod, complained about pain in his right thumb and went to the doctor on Sunday, the New York Post reported. Doctors recommended surgery after seeing the MRI.

"An MRI revealed the tear and Mets Medical Staff has recommended surgery to repair it. The date of the surgery is yet to be determined," a Mets press release said Monday.

Rodriguez was charged with third-degree assault and required to enroll in anger management treatment after the alleged altercation with 53-year-old Carlos Pena, his girlfriend's father, following last Wednesday's game.

K-Rod was suspended for two games and given a restraining order barring him from his Long Island home following the incident.

Rodriguez did not travel with the team to Houston following Sunday night's game. He was examined at the Hospital for Special Surgery in Manhattan, according to a Mets press release.
