MANHATTAN — The NYPD is kicking off a campaign on Tuesday encouraging citizens to text them more crime tips.

This way, a “text-crazed public” can more easily send tips to the Crime Stoppers website, the New York Daily News reported.

“We’ve never really done a campaign to let the public know about these options, so it’s time,” New York City Police Foundation spokesman Gregg Roberts told the News.

The NYPD will handout 2,000 cards and host an advertising campaign that highlights it Twitter account and YouTube page.

As of now, the police only receive about 25 text messages and 900 Web tips per month, the News reported.

Despite their efforts to become more tech-savvy the NYPD said that phone tips are still the most reliable.

“If I have to rely on 140 characters, I might not get the information I need,” Joseph Giacalone, commanding officer of the Crime Stoppers Unit, said to the News about Twitter character limitations.
