MANHATTAN — Midtown and downtown Manhattan have the highest monthly rates for parking in the country, the Wall Street Journal reported.
The good news is, a decline in daily rates puts Manhattan overall third on the list for the nation’s most expensive parking, WSJ reported.
Monthly rates fell 2 percent to average $538 in Midtown. Downtown rates, however, rose 6 percent to $529, according to a survey released Thursday by real-estate brokerage Colliers International.
For daily parkers, downtown Manhattan rates fell by 18 percent to $31, while Midtown daily rates fell by 9 percent to $40, WSJ reported.
The decline in the daily rate could be because consumers have been cutting back on driving into the city in order to save money, WSJ speculated.
As a general trend, more people are coming to Manhattan via public transit. The number of people that drove into the city dropped by 57,000 from 2000 to 2007, according to the Department of City Planning.
