MANHATTAN — The unlimited monthly MetroCard may soon max out at 90 trips and cost riders $99 a month, the Daily News reported.

The proposed plan would also limit the number of rides for weekly cardholders to 21 and raise that fare by $2 to $29 a week.

The restrictions could be unveiled as part of the preliminary 2011 budget later this month. The MTA claims only a small percentage of the riders who use the unlimited monthly MetroCard would be affected.

However, riders who use subways and buses more than three times each day, including weekends, every month worry they may end up having to buy extra monthly "unlimited" MetroCards to make up the difference.

"How is it unlimited?" Flatbush-based actor Galway McCullough, who uses his card up to eight times a day, asked the News. "It’s incredibly misleading."

The MTA hopes to raise revenue by 7.5 percent overall. It is also considering tacking on a $1 surcharge on MetroCards bought in the Subway System, to encourage riders to refill the cards at the vending machines instead of buying new ones, according to the News.

The MTA is set to hold holding court-ordered hearings Tuesday night and Wednesday on a proposal to cut staffing by closing 40 token booths and 44 information kiosks.
