MANHATTAN — Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer and his fiancée Elyse Buxbaum may love New York — but they won't marry here.
The couple told the New York Times they planned on marrying in Connecticut, to protest New York's lack of rights for same-sex couples.
The State Senate killed a gay marriage bill seven months ago.
“If enough people who have somewhat of a profile — not just politicians, but artists and business leaders — start going into Massachusetts or Connecticut and show New York how embarrassing it is that you can’t get a marriage license for same-sex couples, then we will change things," he told the Times.
As a member of the State Assembly, Stringer helped introduce the state's first bill to legalize same-sex marriage, the Times said.
The couple met five years ago, shortly after Stringer was elected the Manhattan Borough President. She is the director of corporate and government relations for the Jewish Museum.
