Former Super Bowl hero Plaxico Burress is asking to be released from jail - so he can fight gun crime.

The ex-Giant, who is nine months into a two year sentence on gun charges, has applied for work release.

His request is backed by six anit-gun and anti-violence groups who want the football great to work for them, his lawyer told the Daily News.

"There are a number of very prominent anti-gun and anti-violence organizations who have written letters on his behalf and who are supporting his release," said the lawyer, Peter Frankel.

Burress was carrying an unlicensed gun in a Manhattan nightclub in 2008 when he shot himself in the leg.

He hid the accident from cops for several hours and checked into a hospital under an assumed name.

A previous application for work release, filed in November last year, was rejected. No decision on the latest request is expected for several weeks.
